Michael Powell, Owner of Powell's Books

In 1979, Michael Powell left his Chicago bookstore to join his father in Portland, Oregon, purchasing Powell's Books from him in 1981. Powell's has grown into a "semantic superpower,” and Michael has been at the center of Portland's social, political, and artistic growth.

Powell's Bookstore has been called the largest independent bookstore in the world and one of the best bookstores in the English language. And though it occupies an entire square block of downtown real estate Powell's manages to keep a relaxed, friendly feel. Powell's distinctive synergy today underpins four full-service bookstores (Powell's City of Books, Powell's at Cedar Hills Crossing, Powell's on Hawthorne, and Powell's at PDX), two specialty stores (Powell's Technical Books and Powell's Books for Home and Garden), and Powells.com.
