THEY SAID WHAT? – Quotes, happenings, and awards from folks in the media

  • Howard White, publisher and founder of Harbour Publishing, has been honored with the Order of Canada, which is awarded to acknowledge outstanding achievements and contributions to Canadian society.

“In my case, this is a team award,” said White. “This isn't for the half dozen or so books I wrote, this is for the 500 books by other people that Mary and I helped to bring into the world over the last thirty years. But they can't give the award to Bus Griffiths and Patrick Lane and Anne Cameron and Tom Wayman and Dan Francis and Jim Splisbury and Clayton Mack and all 200 contributors to the The Encyclopedia of British Columbia, so they have to give it to me.”

White was one of only six British Columbians to be appointed to the Order of Canada on June 29.

  • Chainsaws: A History (Harbour Publishing, HB, 978-1-55017-380-2) won GOLD for Best Regional Non-Fiction in the Canada-West category of the 2007 Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY Awards).

  • International Harvester, McCormick, Navistar: Milestones in the Company that Helped Build America (Graphic Arts Books, HB, 978-0-88240-662-6) got rave reviews from Navistar International. “This project was born from a vision that our senior management had to tell the story of an iconic American company dating back to 1831. The end product was beautifully produced and everyone who sees it raves about it. The response from our employees, retirees, and dealer network has been phenomenal. Graphic Arts did a fantastic job of providing the publishing expertise we so needed, educating and informing us all throughout the process. They didn’t stop there as they remained committed to help retail the book in North America. They made this truly a great experience!”
—Al Saltiel, Vice President Marketing, Navistar International

  • Maximum Salmon: Fishing the West Coast from Alaska to California (Harbour Publishing, SB, 978-1-55017-403-8) and Sharks of the Pacific Northwest: Including Oregon, Washington, British Columbia & Alaska (Harbour Publishing, SB, 978-1-55017-418-2) were featured in the July 6 edition of the Seattle Times.

  • The Portland Red Guide: Sites and Stories from Our Radical Past (Ooligan Press, SB, 978-1-932010-15-2) was ranked as a regional best seller by Powell’s Books, at 5th place based on June 24 to June 30 data.
