The Bill Martin, Jr. Award honors the noted children’s picture book author who was originally from Kansas. Such nominees are selected each year to honor the best picture books for children in grades K-3. This year’s list of 12 nominees will be read in Kansas classrooms between August and November 2006. Each teacher, who is a member of the Kansas Reading Association, will then cast a ballot for his/her choice for the best picture book of the year, based on the children’s responses to the books. The winning book will be determined by January 2007.

- Roy Corral – Alaska Native Ways – Photographer Roy Corral will sign copies of his book at Jitters in Eagle River, Alaska, on June 9th at 7 p.m. This fundraising event is sponsored by the Alaska Fine Arts Academy.
- Lisa Frederic – Running with Champions – New author Lisa Frederic will be at a number of events from June 23rd- June 25th. At each event she will bring Aztec, a retired mushing dog from Jeff King’s team with her and a laptop slide show. She will sign her book at Fireside Books in Palmer, Alaska, on June 23rd at 7 p.m. She will spend most of the day on June 24th signing her book at Iditarod Headquarters for the Iditarod’s Sign-Up weekend. She will sign her book at Cook Inlet Book Company in Anchorage, Alaska, on June 24th at 7 p.m. On June 25th she will sign her book at Borders Books & Music in Anchorage, Alaska, at 1 p.m.
- Joan Harris – The Least of These – Author and illustrator Joan Harris will participate in the 2006 ALA Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana from June 24th- June 27th. She will sign her book at the New Orleans Convention Center on June 24th at 2:15 p.m. and on June 25th at 9:15 a.m. at booth number 2252. Joan will receive her ASPCA Henry Bergh Children’s Award on June 26th at 1:30 p.m. in the Marriot New Orleans Hotel.
- David Muench and Ruth Rudner– Our National Parks – David and Ruth continue their tour around the west. There was a gallery opening at Reed Photo Art Gallery & Imaging in Denver, Colorado on June 2nd. This gallery has over 4500 square feet of space devoted to featuring photography in their book. It will be up through July 15th.
- Jeff Schultz – Iditarod Glory – Along with Lisa Frederic, Jeff Schultz will spend most of the day on June 24th signing his book at Iditarod Headquarters for the Iditarod’s Sign-Up weekend.
