For more than seventy years, Margaret “Mardy” Murie tirelessly championed the environment. Based on the critically acclaimed documentary film, this book tells of an ordinary woman who accomplished extraordinary things.

Simply put, Mardy Murie is a national treasure.

—Robert Redford

Mardy Murie, senior woman of the wilderness movement, has helped generations of men and women understand and then articulate their devotion to the work of preserving wild landscapes. She has a grandmother’s poise, a lover’s fire, a spouse’s allegiance, a curandera’s wariness about Congressional platitudes. When she is gone, the land will break down into tears.

—Barry Lopez

Hello all!

Two years ago PBS began airing a documentary film about a self-sufficient outdoorsman who built a log cabin and a life in the Alaskan wilderness. Dick Proenneke’s story touched viewers across the country and sales of his book, One Man’s Wilderness, skyrocketed. We are thrilled to announce that this February, PBS brings an equally powerful story to their viewers: Arctic Dance: The Mardy Murie Story.

This film celebrates the life and times of Margaret E. “Mardy” Murie, a woman known affectionately as the mother of the American conservation movement. Arctic Dance, by Bonnie Kreps and Charles Craighead and narrated by Harrison Ford, recounts the exceptional life of this ordinary woman who grew up in frontier Alaska, married a pioneer arctic biologist, and dedicated her life to the protection of the magnificent wild lands she so passionately loved. An intimate portrait of a well-loved national figure and a poignant historical document, Arctic Dance reveals the woman behind the conservationist and shows that one person can make a difference.

Mardy Murie told her own story in Two in the Far North (Alaska Northwest Books). Terry Tempest Williams wrote the foreword for the latest edition of this book and reads excerpts from this award-winning classic in the film. In addition, a companion book to the documentary, also named Arctic Dance, includes historical photos and recollections of Mardy from her colleagues and friends. Check your local listings for airing times for Arctic Dance: The Mardy Murie Story.

Read on about press coverage, the Oregon Reading Association Conference, and author events for February. Thank you all for your continued support.

The adventurous birds swoop and cavort across the pages of dramatic, hand-colored linocut illustrations, causing trouble wherever they land. The carefully crafted, rhyming verses capture the fun. With bold lines and rich, jewel-toned colors, the artwork displays the larger-than-life birds against the stunning background of their northern habitat.”
