Sweet Dreams, Polar Bear
by Mindy Dwyer

This bedtime lullaby will ease little ones into sleepy time with visions of the wild times that critters have in dreamland. Bright and playful watercolors create a fantastic world where a fancy poodle dreams of winning the Iditarod; a bear with a belly full of fish dreams of slurping peanut butter and jelly sandwiches; a plain white beluga dreams of painting herself the colors of the northern lights; and more. The repetition of Sweet dreams . . . Sleep tight . . . for each animal encourages children to join in until it’s time to settle down and dream their own fantastic dreams.

  • Kumak’s Fish (Alaska Northwest Books, 0-88240-583-7 HB, 0-88240-584-5 SB, $15.95/$8.95) – Reviewed in the Horn Book: “ . . . In this delightful variant on the old tale of the enormous turnip, when Kumak eventually does hook something, the whole family and eventually the whole village must help pull it in. Light watercolor washes outlined in delicate ink on white paper give the pictures a sense of the icy setting while still conveying the joyful energy of the people as they work together. Bania pays careful attention to the details of place and of the Inupiat people, but the book is never stuffy. She includes several visual jokes as well as nicely defined characters for children to seek out in the pictures, and brings the story to a triumphant and very funny conclusion.”
